Traditionally secretaries have always been women, and despite all the advances in opportunities for women, it's stayed that way. Men just don't seem to grow up dreaming about a secretarial job. October up there is uninformed, however. The secretarial field is expected to grow faster than average over the next decade, particularly for executive and legal secretaries. In addition, most secretaries earn over $30,000 after some experience and/or formal education. In metro Detroit where I live, a competent legal or executive secretary earns $50,000 a year.
