There are several Photoshop programs, I believe... which is the best overall?
I'd use it to make avatars/icons, banners, signatures, and other things for people online, as well as for my own Livejournal and such. Right now I'm using Microsoft PictureIt!, but I'd love to have more interesting choices with tools and such.
Thanks!

For your specific your best bet may be to go with Photoshop Elements which is a stripped down version of the full version of Photoshop. Usually this software is bundled with things like scanners or digital cameras for added value, but just as well you can purchase it off the shelf. Although many would reccomend the full version of Photoshop all the robust features and capabilities come at a hefty price and if you arent going to use them all then I would suggest Photoshop elements, then when you want to accomplish more difficult tasks step up to Photoshop CS2. The good thing about elements is that its interface is just about the same as the full version so your learning curve will be exponentially increased when you make the change.

Photoshop CS2, the latest version of it. Photoshop CS3 is coming out very soon so it's hard to keep up with technology. Of course they all are the same, some may have more features than others or special shortcuts that the previous versions lack. I still use Photoshop 7.0 because I'm very used to it and because it's not only one I have. You can go to adobe.com and download a free version of their latest programs for 30 days.

different softwares are best for different purpose...
like Photoshop 7 is decent enough and serves all purpose, u want more options (which u might not even use) PS CS2 is the best.

with the all-vector option in photoshop's new version, it is the best for all purpose now. and after aquiring macromedia, there is virtually no compition actually. they have roughly 85-90% of the market share now. others being Coral who don't want to upgrade and those with low end work use PhotoPaint or similar softwares...

CS II of course. It's always the latest pro version that's best. And tart it up a bit with Eye Candy and you'll have something that can really rock your art!
