Don't know how you can do this since our system, albeit primarily closed, is still interacting on every level with other bodies in the solar system. You cannot deny the effects of foreign bodies to our system, gravity, solar flares, on and on.
Any student arguing from this standpoint cogently I would give an "A" for effort

Given that a 'closed' is one that does not exchange matter though it can take in matter. The earth absorbs relatively small amounts of matter from sources exterior to itself but contributes none unless the odd space probe or two is counted. This qualifies it as a closed system since the only loss to space is basically radiation. Go to Wikipedia and check for Closed System and Closed Ecological System to get a better rundown.

Start by explaining that the Earth is NOT a closed system. It is driven by solar energy, which makes it most definitely open.

First problem: the Earth's not a closed system, it's an open system.

Get one of those little plastic aquariums with a fish and a plant. That is supposed to represent a basic "closed" system.

just explain to them that the earth has everything on it that people need to live (oxygen, food, water, enviro) and it doesnt need to receive any of these from any where else. The earth grows or has everything humans need to live and survive. Thanks and goodluck
