This one is easy.........I have many times taped the person on the shoulder and asked them if they could not read or count. If they got smart, I very gently pushed their basket out of the line. If they wanted more trouble I told the teller to call the manager who removed them from the line. If it's an elderly person, I just help her put her items in the belt.

If it is like 13 - 15 items.. I wouldn't say or do anything, that's really no big deal, maybe they miscounted or whatever. If it is clearly more than 12 items kindly remind them that they are in the "fast lane" and next time they should use the appropriate lane as to not hold up anyone who only has a few items. OR ... if you don't feel comfortable doing that... say something loud enough for them to hear to someone else in line about them. Of course they may get mad and start a brawl in the line at Wal-mart, Price Chopper or wherever you are shoppping. In that case take those extra items and smack them around with them.

There's no point in pointing it out to them because, face it, they KNOW they're in the wrong line but they're so selfish that they don't care about anybody else but themselves.

I mention it to the cashier when it's my turn. Something like "I noticed that guy in the Budweiser t-shirt had more than 12 items but was in this line. Don't you care if people violate the policy?"

Generally, they say it's store policy to take anybody who is in the line regardless. (The only store I've ever seen enforce the policy is the local Wal-Mart.) I then note what the cashier's name was and what the line was numbered (e.g. lane 5) and go home to do a polite complaint letter to the manager.

Because it's bullshit to have an "express lane" for just a few items if they're going to let every Tom, Dick and Harry with more than 12 items use it.

I would ask them if they noticed that this is the 12 items or less line. If they say "yes", then I would tell them that they don't belong in that line because they have too many items. If they
continue to stick in that line, I would bring it up to the cashier by asking what the store's policy is when someone who "obviously has more than 12 items refuses to go to another line".....

It depends. If they have like 50 items, I might say something like "Oh, this is the express lane. There's another lane open over there", if they look like a reasonable person. If they have like 15 items and they may have miscounted, or look like they have a nasty disposition, I'd say nothing. Waiting an extra 2 minutes is better than a black eye :)
Besides, it's not the responsibility of customers to enforce this, but the responsibility of the store clerks.

Say excuse me but this line is for 12 items or less ask can you go ahead of them or just simply ask the cashier isn't this the express line this normally makes them very uncomfortable and they will ask you if you want to go ahead of them.

Shoot them in the head.....oh sorry. That's a S FL or TX answer. Ask the cashier to enforce the rules.

I would not care too much unless it was a overflowing cart of items. I usually smile or say something friendly to the people in line with me.

You can either
a) get annoyed and say nothing, but fume inside.
b) get annoyed, say something to someone else (not to them), hope they hear and feel bad
c) say something to them and express why you are not happy politely
d) Make your position very clear through demonstrative actions and shouting, perhaps saying something uncalled for if you are really pi$$ed off
e) don't worry about it, life is too short.

I would like to say that I am 'e', however I tend to be an 'a' myself.
