Drinking alcohol, directly affects your kidnies. My god father had died from Alcoholism, from kidney failure. An alcoholic drinking bear daily compared to another one drinking the hard stuff (whiskey, vodka, cognac....etc), the one drinking the hard stuff might be affected a lot sooner as the alcohol content is a lot higher, but a lot if it also depends on a person and their health.

From what you are describing, this person is not vey healthy If he has been drinking and smoking all kinds of sh!t daily. The tar content in one joint of weed is equal to 10 cigaretts. Now, if he is also smoking cigarettes, drinking daily, he is slowly comitting suicide. You are not in denial, he is.

You need to understand, that after 20 years, you don't just quit. This person is an addict and needs help and treatment. I know what is it, my uncle i going through the same thing (minus the weed) and refuses to aknowledge that he needs help.Just by looking at him it is quite obvious that something is wrong.

No matter what you will tell him, he will continue to do what he does, and the more you tell him, the more he will do it.

The nasty cough might or might not be from asthma. Lung cancer is just around the corner. Aside from kidney failure from alcohol, he can get stomach ulcers, might not be able to digest all foods, might have diarhea often and when sober, be in a very bad mod and have the shakes. These are all serious signes that something is wrong and that when he finally wakes up, it might be too late.

His issues seam to be a lot deeper then his drug abuse and he is hiding behind all of this. Some people are not strong enough to face who they are or what they have gone through.

I don't know what else to tell you except best of luck and I really hope he gets help.

Considering that he was 15 when he started, I'd say the drinking is the worst problem and that it probably already has had a negative effect on his health. The cigarrettes would be the second worst problem, but the weed is probably nothing much to worry about.
I wish you luck, but it sounds as though he's already a serious alcoholic. Only he can choose to stop, and if you try to force him to stop, you'll only be in for a lot of heartache.
Dialysis is the treatment required to cleanse the blood when the kidneys have failed or are below a certain level of funtionality. Usually it's given to those with severe diabetes, whose kidneys simply aren't working anymore. It's usually done 2-4 times a week, and can take several hours.

My father is a functioning alcoholic. He hasn't lost any of his jobs due to his addiction or anything like that. But the scars that his alcohol abuse has left behind for my sister and I and also for my mother (they are now separated) are huge. For your kids' sake, you have to put a stop to it. That doesn't mean you can make him stop. But it does mean that you can remove yourself and your children from the equation until he gets the help he needs to be a healthy partner and parent. You are not being unfair to want a family that is whole and unscathed by his alcoholism. You cannot be a social drinker when you are an alcoholic. That is fact. My father used to go through the same dry periods and flare ups that you are describing. A few months -- even a few years at one point -- without drinking and then boom, a beer here a beer there and right back into the pattern.

He is at risk for major health problems, the alcohol will affect his liver and also can cause esophageal hemorrhage, and as far as heart damage the smoking and the alcohol will have divers affects on the heart, he is also at high risk of emphysema when you are young you don't think these things will affect you but at the rate he is going in another seven to ten years it will be a different story. My dad was a heavy drinker and smoker and he had a heart attack at age 47 that killed him, 47 is too young to die of something that you can control.

From what you are saying he already has some serious health effects from the years of drinking and doing drugs. Take it from an alcoholic in recovery, he will not quit until he is ready. Unfortunately some alcoholics are never ready to quit. The best thing for you to do is get help for yourself, try alanon or talk to your doctor about counseling.

Seems like he is robbing his body of B vitamins.
He needs B vitamins for the drinkin.
The smoking drains A,C,E vitamins that he needs to replace daily.
Other than that he seems like a normal human male experiementalling with lifes choices.
Support him and get him some vitamins and V8 juice to go with his brew.

A person has a problem with alcohol the first time they have a black out. You can't change another person and it is futile to try, you are the only one who gets hurt. Let the person do what they want and move on with your life.
