The following section will show you how to start strumming a guitar, with strumming patterns for you to practice and learn.
Basic strumming is fundamental to playing a guitar and I have found that most people need to be taught how to do it.
The following strumming patterns will show you the fundamentals of strumming and set you on the right path.
Your right arm is like the drummer in a band - it keeps time. You need to be able to move it up and down in strict time with a metronome.
Practice with a metronome, drum machine, or favourite CD, until you are confident that you can move your arm up and down perfectly in time with the music without touching the strings of your instrument.
Here is a metronome in case you don't have one. It'll open in a new window and take a few minutes to download, so just minimise the window and read

A strum is the act of brushing one's fingers over (strumming) the strings of a string instrument such as a guitar. A strumming pattern is a preset pattern used by a rhythm guitar. Compare with pattern picking. Strumming patterns may be indicated through notation, tablature, up and down arrows, or slashes. For example, a pattern in common time or 4/4 consisting of alternating down and up eighth note strokes may be written: /\/\/\/\ The pattern most typical of rock and related styles would be written: / /\ \/\

'ME' told you right, to strum you play all the strings simultaneously. You can do so with or without a pick. to do so without a pick hold your fingers(right hand) as if your holding a pick and lightly strum across the strings. Practise this method until your comfortable with it.

strumming is when you sweep the pick (or your fingers) across all the strings.
Usually in a repetitive way, to rhythm. AS opposed to 'picking' or 'plucking' single strings.
