I have a sister who is half black and half white. According to the "law" if you have Black blood that runs down from the mother's side then you are to use black as the dominant race. That being said I guess as little as you probably have in you, you can probably choose. The thing is you should be proud of both and learn as much as you can about the cultures and rituals of each. Both have made wonderful contributions to the human race in general and either should be happy to claim you as well.

I understand where you coming from, my great-grandfather is Irish on my mother side though her dad (but she is black as well as Indian and African from her mother side) but I was also taught your are what your father is(my dad has black, Indian and Cuban)When you fell out application you can also write you are apart of the human race, if your want to consider yourself white do so but learn about the other part of you; that what I did and every St. Patrick day I wear a button that states "Kiss Me I'm Irish" I get strange look but I don't care! I just happy to Me. Black American with many different back rounds.

I was thinking about that very thing the other day. Really
African-Americans aren't really black. We're caucasian and African. The "racial rules" are outdated and a pile of biotry. Really, I can act white or black, so to speak when I want to because I am both. The racial rules of 1/8 black blood black are outdated and false. Really, I am black and white, and Native American, I belong to all of those racial groups so I will not deny any of them. Toss the old racial guidelines, they are scientifically, morally, and physically false. We are just humans.

I look forward to world in which nobody really cares about that sort of thing. My greatgrandmother was Swedish, nobody seems to care one way or the other. Your situation should be about the same. I'm 1/8 Swedish I guess. You are 1/8 black I guess. SO what. Maybe tell people. Anyone who would care and treat you any different is not worth talking with anyway.

You are a citizen of the world, of multi-cultural descent.
I guess the question comes up when you have to fill out forms that ask your ethnicity, white, black, Hispanic, etc. but I think they are illegal anyway.
Put what you feel. If you feel and identify more with white, put white. If you feel or identify more with black, put black or put other. I consider you multi-cultural as are most folks walking around America today.

Why do you need to categorize yourself? The old south loved to do that - I guess your mom is a 'quadroon' is you want to use the language of the oppressors. I think, seriously, you would be an octaroon to such madmen.

How about you consider yourself a person and one from a family progressive enough to have people in it who loved across the color line?

It's your choice. Oprah says if you have a drop of black blood, you are black. What ethic group are you comfortable in. How about cousins and such. Where you raised with them and are they black or white. Where do you feel you best fit in. I guess there are good and bad points to being a "minority" if you are applying to school, etc.

There was a law on the books, I think it was a federal law, that stated if you were 1/32 Black then you were to identify yourself as Black but I don't think it applies anymore.

You probably should consider yourself Caucasian, but in most cases race is just a state of mind. Be who you think you are. Look in the mirror and your soul.

You should consider yourself genuine american pie.

For cultural purposes , you get the best of both worlds. A genuine connection to two very different cultures.

When asked ethnic background by snoopy governmental and employment paperwork, simply leave blank or write american, its what I do.

God does not see color among many other outward things, he sees the heart and its the same color in all of us.
