I had a toliet problem like that before and I tried the plunger (which worked in the beginning) but didn't work after a while. I didn't have the money to call a professional and I was scared of getting ripped off. So I bought a toliet auger at the hardware store which was about $20.00 for the longest one they had. I pushed in the tip and at first it was not that easy but once it made it over the curves it went in easier. Once it was over the curves you can push it in with the handle and then spin it a few times. This really works great. I didn't get any poo on me at all. When you pull it out you have to wash it real good to get the poo off but it isn't too bad. Then off to the garage for the next time. I feel better having the toliet auger around now because I know I will not have that problem again. I got this advice from a contractor who took pity on me and he told me that is what he does and he charges big bucks for.

You can remove the toliet if you want but there is no need for that. They usually do this for show to charge you more money.

Best $20.00 I ever spent.

It depends on what is clogging it - my children tend to try to flush small toys. Let's assume there is nothing solid - Start with a plunger (the "accordion" type are better).
I assume there is still water in the bowl - if not make sure there is. Then slowly push the plunger down and PULL hard - this is going to splash so be prepared. Repeat this - hopefully this will "pull the clog" rather than push it in further. Most of the time some HARD work with the plunger will work.
If this doesn't work you will need a toilet auger (Home Depot or other hardware store will have it) it is a plastic tube with a "cable" running through it. On one end you have a handle. Insert the bent end of the auger into the hole. Then push the cable in while turning the handle. You should be able to push the whole length of cable in with some work. the turning action should catch the clog and pull it forward. If neither works then you may have to remove the toilet (if it is something such as a small toy).

If you are talking about the bowl being full of paper and other "stuff" I suggest you get a small garbage can, put in a good plastic garbage bag. Tie a knot in the bottom to make sure it is water proof. Put it in the can and then take another garbage bag and using it as a glove, reach in the bowl and take out as much solids as you can. After that, peel off the bag on your hand, seal the garbage can bag and take to your outside garbage can.

I know. This sounds yukky but it is a lot cheaper than calling a plumber.

Then slowly let enough water in the bowl to cover a plunger and try plunging it. Be careful not to splash water on you. Use only swift forceful downward strokes. Then let the water fill the plunger again and repeat until it flows. This works 98% of the time. If not, then you need a commode snake that you can purchase at Home Depot or hardware store. They are not expensive.

Run a snake down the toilet and see what comes out. A "snake" is a flexible wire thing w/ a little curly thing at the end. This should unsnag any loose stuff in there.

My then 3 year old daughter once threw the little spring loaded, hard plastic cyclinder that holds toilet paper down the toilet. We had to remove the bowl from it's mounts and take it out back and run a hose thru it. Other than time, it just cost us a new wax seal ($3-4).

Good luck.

clogged toilet is often attacked in this order:

*** plunger (these little guys work pretty good if you get the rubber bell down tight on the bowl discharge and get good suction on the upstroke and pressure on the down stroke)

if that just doesn't do it, then next if often

*** garden hose (you may have to bail your toilet to get it clean enough and empty enough to do this part easily - of course that can be gross but toilet unclogging tends to be gross) they make a little device to hook to your garden hose to seal the drain so you can turn on the hose and really pressure up the toilet drain, I have usually used a wet rag wrapped around the hose and jammed in so the hose discharge is down the toilet drain and the rag is pushed as hard as possible to seal

this can make a mess in your house if your hose leaks at a connection of something so keep an eye on it

you usually have to hook the hose up outside because people don't have a hose connection inside but sometimes there is one at your washing machine

*** snake (a plumbers snake is a long spring like thing you can buy at a hardware store or maybe borrow from someone, you push and twist, with the handle thing, the spring down through your toilet and as far down your pipe as you can or need to)

*** roto router (sometimes you have to call the man, the companies like roto router that have a big motorized snake that can even cut through roots that have grown into your underground drain piping

good luck

Well--it just depends. Sometimes a object of some kind will simply get stuck inside and you have a impossible time with it. A "snake" run down it will often take care of the problem. You might want to just replace it with another new or used one. Before you do anything--check to see if the vent line is clear and no bird nests built inside .

Call a plumber!!! Somebody in my town did some illegal plumbing work and some kind of fecal bacteria infected the whole town (not kidding). We had to boil water for 3 days!
