Classes do help. There are many different techniques and types of classes. The method we took was the Bradley Method. It works with relaxation and education techniques rather than odd breathing. We also learned the basics about emergency childbirth, right to know laws, informed consent laws, other methods of dealing with pain including medication, hypnosis, and a bunch of stuff I forgot. You also get a chance to interact with other students, parents in the class. That can be a big plus. Remember that you have a choice. You can choose something other than Lamaze or Bradley. Get informed. Interact with your mate. You got into this together, you can "give birth" together. The last thing to remember: no matter what you choose be ready and willing to choose another option. We never got to use most of what we learned in class. Circumstances required a C-section. I still don't consider the experience a waste of time. We learned much about the medications required during the surgery. We were willing to change plans. We had a back-up plan. We put our wishes in writing. Overall we had a good experience even though our original wishes could not be.

I didn't do the classes and I got through my labor just fine. The hospital where I delivered charged an arm and a leg for them. If you want to take them I say go for it, but it really isn't imperative. You can always get a few books and learn about lots of different techniques to see which ones may work for you. You may find that some are right for you and your wife and other things are just plain silly. Good luck!!

Lamaze classes are really cool. Hey, go and hae fun. Make light of things. You will find it very informational and while in class start talking about the benefits of breastmilk for baby, mommy and daddy. In our Lamaze class I stated that breastmilk increases and stimulates brain activity. Before I finished, the instructor chimed in to say how right I was, and I jumped back in and stated that is why I get as much as I can. She turned red. Everyone fell out. When I got home, my wife and I had a long talk.

Yes to a degree the breathing works. I think the most important and best advice I received from a nurse while I was delivery my 2nd child was that when pushing, do NOT arch your back. You aren't allowing gravity to work with you if you arch and it complicates this. Keep the small of your back against the delivery bed and push down. This advice was so helpful that the difference between my 1st and 2nd child was about an hour & half of stitches.

They help some people, who really want to do labor without drugs. Drugs make the breathing pretty much unnecessary. If you go to class, make sure you are the one to pay attention. Don't expect the delivery room nurses to walk you through breathing techniques, and certainly don't expect your wife, in the worst pain of her life, to remember what she learned. If you are going to do the breathing, it's going to be all about you and your coaching.

Yes they do help!! You need to go to the class with her and learn the breathing techniques with her. Just me when your wife is in labor, she is not going to remember what she learned in some class.

I have 3 children and another one on the way and I never went to one of those classes. I personally do not think that it is necessary because when your in labor everything happens so fast that it would not really matter if you went to those classes or not.
But it is not a bad thing to go because maybe it will help her out when she is in labor...

To be honest you get out of it what you want to get out of it. I took them and used some of it with my first child but none with my other two (I found other things i liked better). Lots of good education from them to understand what exactly is going on during the labor so you don't feel like everyone is speaking a foriegn language.

I took them all with my first pregnancy and I thought that all they did was make me feel like a darned old hoot owl! This time around I am taking baby Tai Chi and loving every minute of it! It helps me to remain calm throught the contractions! And it works!
