There is no use speculating; this intriguing question can only be resolved empirically. While you're running the experiment, I would suggest you test a variety of different variables. Don't limit your testing to butter. Try smearing the cat with a variety of srpeads: butter, jam, peanut butter, mayo, ketchup. And try dropping the cat from a variety of heights.
Other experimenters dropping cats from various heights have concluded that the cat's ability to land on its feet depends on the height. Drop him from too low a height and the cat lands on his back, as he does not have time to flip over and stabalize himself. However, these experimenters did not apply any condiments at all to the cat, so we cannot assume that their results will hold.

After repeated clinical trials, I have determined that four out of five cats dropped from the roof of a two story building with butter on their back will land on their feet. The fifth cat scratched me so I actually threw him at the ground butter side down. Poor little guy didn't stand a chance.

Steps:
Place popcorn in a plastic zippered bag.Mix together a little water and food coloring and pour into popcorn bag. Zip and shake until popcorn absorbs the color. Make as many colors as you wish. Paint a picture with glue and attach colored popcorn.
