I prefer AVG anti-virus. It's effective, easy to use, and most importantly, free.

Spyware Doctor. You have to buy it but believe me it's the best. We used to have MacAfee, Norton and then AVG (Another thing about Norton and MacAfee was that they were always causing the computer to crash or really lag). We even had a bunch of different programs to remove adware and CCleaner so on so on. last night my bf had so many viruses on his computer and adware that he kept being redirected to other sites. We spent hours yesterday trying to clean it and disinfect it. All those programs picked up things here and there but we still had the stupid redirecting to other webpages like "search@hand". We managed to buy it, instal it and run it. It picked up almost 450 problems (trojans, adware, so on). Now it's running beautifully, has all kinds of neat features too and. It was considered the best in 2005 by Pc Magazine.

I have tried and used a lot of them but I always come back to Norton for reliability.
Even if it bogs my system and runs a litle slow during scans...I know I have the reliability to go anywhere on the net.
Trend Micro makes a good one too

I've tried them all. At this point, all I use is NOD32. It doesn't hog your systems resources and it's far more reliable then Norton. Kaspersky and BitDefender are also great products.

Stay away from Norton products. They're like McDonald's, great advertising, crap product. If you like your computer to be full of viruses and run slowly then you'll use Norton.

The best will always be up for debate.
Whatever you choose, it will not work unless it is kept updated and current.
This is so important that I will repeat myself. It has to be kept updated, or it will not work. Sometimes even then they don't work. The new virus has to be out there long enough to be identified and code written to counter it. If you are among the unlucky first to get it, you are out of luck. Also, thanks for submitting data for others to get protection. It stinks, but that is the way it works.
