Ferrets are great IF you have a lot of time, money and the willingness to commit yourself to them for 6 - 10 yrs.
A cat is much easier to take care of. It's easier to find a vet who knows his way around cat country, so vet care is cheaper. Cats can be left alone without having to be caged.
Ferrets are prone to several diseases as they age and those are expensive to treat. Ferrets will get into anything. The majority of ferrets does not like to cuddle. Ferrets are litter trainable, but will never be as accurate as a cat. They don't bury their poo.
Ferrets are not exactly nocturnal, but would sleep 20 out of 24 hrs if allowed to do so. Cat food is cheaper than ferret food and more readily available.
I used to have a life, I traded it in for ferrets. I love the little buggers, but they are not for everybody. Do a lot of research before you decide. Once you do, why don't you consider adoption?
Go to www.petfinder.com. Lots of critters looking for forever homes.

It really depends on what you are looking for in a pet. Cats are considerable more affectionate than a ferret, although ferrets do have their own way of showing affection. Both cats and ferrets can be litter trained, although ferrets arent usually as good at it as a cat. Ferrets do require a ton of work, really the same amount as a dog does. Ferrets need a high quality diet (mine get Innova Evo-50% protein), lots of play time outside of a cage (they get cage stress when not given enough playtime...2-4 hours minimum a day), they are also very mischevious. You will have to ferret proof your house for their safety and to keep them out of stuff you dont want them getting into. My ferrets get their bedding washed every week, potty boxes cleaned twice daily, and bathed once every three months (the most you can safely bathe a ferret is once a month, any more than that and they will not only smell worse, but you can destroy their coat too.). If you are interested in a ferret, look up you local ferret rescue (http://www.ferret.org/links/shelters.shtm). They will be more than happy to let you see what a ferret is like before getting one. They also have tons for adoption if they are the right pet for you. In addition ferrets do tend to be a bit more costly than a cat is...exotic vet care (you will need to find a qualified ferret vet), a suitable cage, toys (you will need to change toys often, ferrets get bored), and the general start up costs for a ferret. A ferret book to live by is FERRETS FOR DUMMIES. It seriously is the best ferret care book on the market. I have both ferrets and cats and love them for completely different reasons. You will really need to see which one you would like more. Just make sure you do your research before deciding, it is not fair to get a pet and then get rid of it because its not what you expected.

I have two that i share with my son. As long as you keep the cage cleaned and bathe them the smell is less than some humans and most cats and dogs. In fact ours very rarely ever smell. They have both been descented and fixed, the albino male is a little over 18 months and the babygirl is new , shes taken over the house. They are fun to watch and keep us constantly laughing. They hide things to send me on treasure hunts to find, like my flipflops, wallet, coinpurse, keys. But they always put them in the same spot. The little girl keeps her big brother busy, they sleep almost all day and play at night, however you can alter that if you keep them playing and busy in the day. They are easy to bathe, and very few actually bite, and if they do its not to hurt. They love attention, so if you are on the go alot you might want to rethink getting one and make sure you have a vet nearby that excepts them, that they are legal in you state and you have a place to board them if necessary when out of town. Cats are just as lovable and take less work. So be sure of the time you will be able to devote, research with your local pet store or vet. Best bet, cat sit or ferret sit for someone and you'll get your best answer. Also ferrets play well with dogs and cats.

Ferret, but if you do get one then research about them and read books on them.
Ferrets are NOT smelly, the only time they stink bad is when people do not take care of them. Ferrets have their scent glands removed, it does depend on where you buy it from but most of the time they're removed or you can have it done yourself at the vet if it isn't done already.
Ferrets only bite when they're pups because they teeth just like human babies do so they need something safe to chew on, like a ferret toy, cat toy (without catnip), or something else along those lines.

Ferrets bite more than cats, but can be trained. They need to be descented, though, or they smell awful. I personally prefer cats, but I've known 2 ferrets, one with a shoe fetish (she carried off my size 10s!) and one named Mo Lester. Go figure why.

Cat. Ferrets smell all the time and it gets ito everything. Cats breath can stink but you can do something about that. And the littler box but that can also be taken care of.

I would get a cat, I think ferrets are sneaky, but that's only my personal opinion.
