I am currently a smoker with no children....but was the child of a smoker who got caught smoking when I was in 8th grade. I would tell my own children what my parents told me...it's forbidden in my house.
The obvious points to make are that children don't have the right to do what adults do based on the whole hypocracy card....so what if the parent smokes or drinks, or whatever. The bottom line is that the parents set the rules, limits and boundaries....
I think that a parent, smoker or non-smoker who allows their child to smoke in their home is neglectful and has some obvious issues with positive parenting. I would have concerns that the parent was trying to hard to be a friend to their child rather than a parent.
When I got caught smoking when I was young, I didn't do it again until I was in college. My parents knew because they could smell it on my clothes. However, I still didn't smoke my first cigarette in front of my smoker mom until I was 26 years old.....I felt that it would be disrespectful and unneccessary. When I did finally smoke in front of her, it was only after I was in my own house living my own life.

I know that especially if you are smoking yourself, or have smoked, it seems so hypocritical to tell your kids not to smoke. So, I guess I have a question. Do you wish you could quit smoking? If so, talk honestly to your child about that. Tell them how possibly you started smoking before it was known about all the danger/health hazards of smoking and that if you would know what you know now, that you wouldn't have started smoking.
If you have no desire to quit smoking, then you still know the health risks, and as a responsible adult, you have to make sure your child knows this.
Lets be honest here, these really are the facts. Smoking is very dangerous, but, if you haven't found the strength to stop, you still have to be honest and let your children know it's not a good habit to start. And, as a smoker yourself, you know how you hate people telling you this, so be very honest and express how you want your child to live a long, healthy life, which I'm quite sure is a fact.

I don't think that if a parent caught a kid smoking and forbidded it they would stop smoking. My parents tried it and I still smoked. I started smoking when I was 15. Sure they cared and talked to me about it but I didn't care, I was going to do what I wanted to do. The best thing to do is, once you have kids STOP SMOKING and try to set a good example. As odd as I thought it was one day I was sitting in a parking lot in my car smokking at the dentist. I saw a woman and her son walk by me. The mother must have smelt it and turned towards my car and said to her son "Do you smell that, that's disgusting and can make you very ill." At first I was insulted but then I just realized she's trying to help her kid out. Try to prevent it when their younger, once they hit teens they don't listen.

i would sit them down and make them chain-smoke cigarettes until they literally got sick. I think this would have worked on me. Wish someone would have done it.
If this didn't work I would talk about the expense, what personal health challenges smoking has caused me and tell them how many times I have tried to quit and how hard it is to quit.
Then I would forbid it until they were 18, with penalties spelled out for each occurrence.

Quit smoking, if you don't want your children to smoke. If you do it then what reason do they have to avoid it? When you have kids you give up the right to do a lot of selfish/harmful things that would ordinarily be only your business.

Sit them down and tell them the pros (as if there is any pros) and cons to smoking. I wouldn't want to blow up in their face. That will only take us a step back. I would be calm and tell them that it is something they don't want to get into the habit of. Show them pictures of healthy and not so healthy lungs. Maybe even have someone talk to them that is on oxygen or has emphysema or something like that. sam

I would tell that it can be harmfull to your health. But as my 7yr old just told me in her own way. She can smell the stink off it and would not want that smell got in her lungs,
