30 x 30 = 900
31 x 31 = 961
32 x 32 = 1024

So the square root is more or less 31

You can calculate it in a more exactly way using the method that I just used or this one:

10'00.00 l_31.7_______
..100.......61 x 1 = 61
....3900 626 x 6 = 3756
......144

You do this this way: First you splitt the number in groups of 2 figures and you find the most aproximated root that is less to the first group (the first group is 10, the root is 3, I have 1 as the reminder)

Then you write the second group (00), so that you obtain 100.

Then you calculate the double of this quantity (6) and you try to find a number A so that sixty (6 by 10)+ A multiplyed by A is less than 100.

This number is 1. 61 x 1 = 61 and 62 x 2 is greater than 100.

You put the 1 next to the 3. You calculate the reminder.

You find the double of 31, etc

let y = sqrt of x , when x = 900, y = 30.

according to problem, x + @x = 1000, where @x means increment in 'x'.
so @x =1000-x
@x=100

we have to calculate of @y, that means y is 30 when x is 900. when there is 'x' increment, there is also 'y' increment. we get sqrt of 1000
when we sum the value of 'y' and @y.

to get @y, formula is @y = dy/dx . @x

so we need to differentiate y = sqrt of x

dy/dx = 1/2sqrt of x

when 'x' is 900, dy/dx= 1/60.

so @y = dy/dx . @x

@y = 1/60 . 100

@y =5/3

@y = 1.6667

so , we get the sqrt of 1000 when we sum the value of 'y' and @y

sqrt of 1000 = y + @y

sqrt of 1000 = 30 + 1.667

sqrt of 1000 = 31.6667
