Well, an endless supply of diapers would be something any mother appreciates. Clothes are also a bonus, especially onesies and those stretchy footed sleepers. Babies go through an amazing amount of clothes in a couple of days.
But, how about, a coupon for free babysitting services for however many hours you want to volunteer? The gonna-be Mom will really appreciate that in just a few months.

is she registered? if she is, the store where she is registered at should have a huge list of things she wants/needs.
you could also go with the classic baby bathtub filled to the brim with baby supplies. or do the same with a diaper bag.
pregnant women can never have enough diapers. so make sure that you get her a package of diapers with your gift.
one hint...buy 3-6 or 6-9 month clothes (if you wish to buy clothes). everyone will be buying newborn stuff, and the baby will hardly wear everything. besides, your friend will be thankful to have clothes for her baby when he outgrows all the newborn gifts. (do the same with the diapers, buy a size 1 or 2)

You don't say if this is her first baby. If it is, she will need everything! If she is on a limited income: disposable diapers and coupons for more, baby formula, baby bottles, soft towels and washcloths, lotion, diaper rash meds., powder, etc. All these things could be individually wrapped and put in a larger gift of your choice - a car seat, a stroller, a playpen, etc. Get creative with the wrapping and bows. Good luck - have fun with it.

Get her a cute little boys outfit, or burp cloths and a diaper bag. Or, ask her if she's registered anywhere. That would be a good idea for her to do, so she doesn't get a lot of the same stuff!!!

Don't get her baby clothes size 0-3mo, because they grow out of them really fast and because that's what half of the guests will get her. A gift certificate to a baby store is a good idea. She can always buy what she need. Or you can get her something for herself like a certificate to a day spa, like this she can pamper herself after the baby arrives.

I am 6 months pregnant and i found these things at babies r us called Swaddlers. They are these strechy cotton blankets that swaddle the baby. They say they help the baby sleep, reduce colic and help prevent SIDS. They are only $9.99 too. It it is a pain in the butt to keep babies swaddled with regular blankets. I am due in January and cant wait to use mine

If she has a registry, look on it and choose something...If not then ask people what she needs. If all that fails, Get her a gift card that can be used for items "she" chooses like clothes, formula and diapers.

if you live near enough to help her out, make a homemade coupon book with a few coupons for home-cooked meals brought to her house, one free housecleaning, 2 free hours of babysitting, etc.
otherwise, i agree with the first post... you can't go wrong with diapers.
