Old tried and true is cornstarch if it didn't work they wouldn't put it in powder, unless you completely dry the skin before applying the lotion it holds moisture in and doesn't work as well. If possible let they baby lay on a towel without a diaper for a while then apply the cornstarch or lotion. that should help. Good luck

Corn Starch is very good. A lot of us already have this at home in our cabinets. Or you could try a feminine vaginal powder. The ones that help stop odor, itching or commonly used for yeast infection. Even the cream Monistat 7 can do the trick! When you get a chance to go to the store by some Boudreaux's Butt Paste. Kind of costly, but to me it the best diaper rash ointment on the market. One tube should last you at least 2 to 3 months. And the rash will be gone in less than 3 days. I know a lot of this may be strange but tryst me; I am a mother of six (5 girls and 1 boy and an unknown on the way!) The suggestion of the Monistat cream came from my sons doctors when he had a diaper rash which can sometimes be a yeast infection instead of an actual diaper rash. They look somewhat alike. Hope this is some help to you and good luck to you!

The best thing to do right away is to take his diaper off and leave it off. Let air get to the rash and dry it out. Fresh air will get rid of diaper rash faster than anything I know of.
I wear diapers 24 / 7 because of a medical condition and I've had to deal with rashes from time to time and I find that clears it up the best. Once it has had some fresh air then I use a medicated lotion which helps to take care of and soothe any areas that might have some open sore spots.
You can always put him in his playpen or crib with a blanket under him to catch any accidents while he isn't in his diaper. To help, you could even pin something around his waist like a skirt to help with accidents but still allow the air to get to his bottom.
I wish you luck.

A & D ointment is the only thing to use for diaper rash, works very well. Tried many but this worked the best. The fastest way to stop the baby from crying is to give them a cool to medium temperature bath, not hot, making sure to be very careful by their rash but to get all the urine off and then pat dry, don't rub and put baby powder on. And keep changing the diaper very regular so it doesn't get worse. And everytime making sure to get the urine or poop washed off of the skin. No lotion because it makes urine stick to skin and it burns that's also why he is crying. Only powder until you can get ointment for them. Also it's a good thing to let them keep their diaper off so their butt is not moist all the time. Just throw a wash cloth over them and they'll feel better from that too. Then wash their warm tears off and give them a big hug and kiss. Good luck.

i have to agree with most of the board here - CORN STARCH
Corn starch draws the moisture away from the skin and holds it till next change time. Vaseline helps prevent the acids of urine and bowel from touching the skin, but doesn't allow the skin to breath - which it needs to do in order to heal. You can also try your own yeast infection cream such as canestan. Apply it topically - especially if baby has bleeding sores - and you will be amazed. (My pediatrician and an emergency Dr - so that is two different Dr's - told me it was totally safe - applied topically) and it's very soothing for baby. The best thing to do is keep clean and and give plenty of air time. In the morning when the stores are open i highly recommend Zinc cream - no name Zinc Oxide or brand name Zincofax - You wouldn't believe the difference it makes! It's water soluable - therefore with every wipe of the bum your cleaning ALL the "old" stuff - Unlike creams such as penetan that don't even break down in the bath. It's creamy so it applies very easily with little to no preassure on babies sore bum - unlike other creams that are very pasty and nasty to work with. The zinc is just a wonderful healer i would place in the same terms as aloe vera! IT WORKS.

when you get a chance go to the drug store and buy the anti fungal cream for jock itch and ringworm and put that on your babys bum and the diaper rash will be gone in about 2 days
for now if you have any polysporin or hydrocortisone cream werks good too also use daiper rash cream at every diaper change to prevent diaper rash and change frequently you should have abou 6-8 dirty diapers a day

The lotions and creams never worked on my youngest granddaughter. But the baby powder does wonders. As soon as we apply it she stops screaming. I really cover her bottom with it though. She was a preemie that I am raising at even at 2 she still gets real bad rashes. If you don't have baby powder you can use good ole Corn Starch. Apply it just as you would the baby powder. And remember that you can't over dose on it.....

Try olive oil. I made a massage oil of olive oil and lavender essentail oil and that helped diaper rashes a little bit. But just olive oil will help if you don't have any LEO.
Or air out time. My baby hardly ever wears a diaper because her skin is so sensitive. Keeping her out of diapers does wonders for her skin (and no, it's not messy: http://www.ec-information.com).
Try a warm bath. Warmer than you would normally have it for your baby. That helps a bit with rashes.

you will probably not believe this, but,my grandfather told me this, and I have done this to all 3 of my children, AND IT DOES WORK!! First of all, clean your babies bottom with plain water and let air dry. Them take a bottle of milk of magnesia and shake it VERY WELL, apply to your baby's hiney until his.her little bottom is WHITE, let air dry and then put his/her diaper on.This works wonders on those BAD diaper rashes, you know the kind where it looks like your baby's butt is so raw it looks like it is bleeding..You may think I'm nuts, but i promise you, if you try it, IT WILL WORK!!, You can even use the generic brand, just make sure it is the milk of magnesia stuff...
