Whats being Southern got to do with it? Any American living in Italy will be exposed to a new culture and ideas and must adjust accordingly.
Have confidence in yourself and go for it.

I'm a southern boy with hopes of travelling the world...I wouldn't care if I stuck out like sore thumb, experiencing different cultures is the spice of life!

I would say that whether you're from the south or from Antarctica, it's always good to read up on culture before you go somewhere. I'm sure you can "make it" as long as you speak a little of the language and respect Italian customs.

what's the purpose of your trip? most people travel to other countries to learn about the different cultures and see the "sights," to expand their horizons. if that's your mindset, you shouldn't have any trouble!!! i'm very jealous! wish i could go to italy!

Speaking the language will be your only obstacle. Once you learn it, you'll have it made in the shade!
