Captain James Cook ( 1728 - 1779) made Voyages of Discovries. (1768 - Pacific Expedition)
The main purpose of Cook's voyages was exploration, and the gathering of scientific information such as navigational charts, samples of flora and fauna they found on any islands where the ships stopped.
"He was able to gather a vast number of sketches of local plants, animals, people and their customs.
Astronomical data and observations were also routinely noted down, for their importance in navigation."
