Do you have or know a person that thinks that they know baseball, and when you asked them what is their favorite team, they pick THE YANKEES or any team that is favorited to win. But they don't know the history about that team?

Example: My girlfriend thinks that she knows baseball and her favorite team is THE YANKEES because she thinks Derek Jeter is cute and the Yankees wins alot. But when I questioned her a little history about the YANKEES (I've gave her easy question dated back to 2004) and she couldn't give me answer but THE YANKEES ARE GOING TO THE WORLD SERIES.

The Yankees are my least favorite team in baseball. Of course you are going to win all these division titles when you buy a team. I have much more respect for a team like Detroit, who has fought from being one of the worst teams to one of the best or Minnesota, who gives a bunch of young no-name players a chance and it is working for them. Cheering for the Yankees is the equivalent of going to a casino to cheer for the house. Everyone loves a good underdog and the Yankess are not and will never be an underdog.

Julian, you're lucky to find a girl that even likes baseball, man!
I love baseball, but in reality, I don't keep up with the History part of it. I don't really care that Bill Dickey holds the Yankees record for opening day starts. Who's that? Who cares! I care about today's Yankees, who's winning, who's losing, who's in a pennant race today, not 30 years ago.
Last year is last year. This year, Derek Jeter is still cute, the Yankees ARE going to win the World Series, they do win a lot, and that's all I need to know!
Your girlfriend sounds great just the way she is!
By the way: Bill Dickey's record is 15. I forgot to mention that. : )

When I first started getting into Baseball there were no MLB teams nearby. I watched games on tv and picked who I was going to root for on the spot. After watching enough games I started rooting for teams because I liked the style of certain players on the team. Soon ironically enough the two teams I rooted for most often were the Yankees and Redsox LOL. Thurman Munson was my favorite player at the time. I liked the gritty way he attacked the game. So I became a Yankees fan. Later on I learned about Ruth, Gehrig, Gomez, Ford, Mantle and so on and it really cemented my love for the team. Not because of win loss percentages. I rooted for the Yankees origionally when they were horrible. They were owned by CBS and finished last or near the bottom every year. I suffered through the 80s teams of ancient vets and never has beens who couldn't care less about winning. So I paid my dues as a fan. My only consolation was a long history or winning. For me that was ancient history thorugh. For a few years in the mid 70's the Yankees put together a winning team. However the cast was more interesting than the games they won. Catfish Hunter, Mickey Rivers, Thurman Munson, Guidry, Lyle, Gossage, Chambliss, Dent, Nettles, Doc Medich, Lou Pinella, Randolf, man these guys were charactors. I never really liked Reggie. Though I cheered him when he hit those 3 HRs in the WS. The Yanks didn't need Reggie and at best he was a distraction. I'd take a good clutch hitter like Chambliss or Munson over 3 Reggies any day.

I remember Munson growing a beard to irk the ownership. Mattingly and his long hair. I hate the stuffy athmosphere the ownership tries to force on some really cool players. The players though, they've been what made the team all along.

Give your gf a break. She has an arbitrary means of picking a favorite team. It might even change a time or two but at least she's interested in Baseball. She's also no presented with a chance to learn about the teams, the players, the history. What draws us first into the game is meaningless. It's that we get into it at all. That is what counts.

I do have to admit that living in Houston has made me a stronger Astro's fan. Pushed them up to #2. This wouldn't have happened if I didn't already like the Stros. Sorry location is too me a poor way of choosing a favorite team. You shouldn't give your loyalty based on things that so easily change like location or winning. People move, teams rise and fall. Should be something that's more lasting than a temporal accident that decides what your favorite team is in my opinion.

So feed her love of baseball, don't try to kill it just because you don't like her favorite team. That you both love baseball means more than favorite teams. Educate her on players. How the game works. A little at a time though. Take her to games (assuming you can afford it anymore. I went from seeing a dozen games a year to one if I was lucky over the last decade because of the rising costs and stupid choice for location of a new ballpark.)

Maybe you should get a new girlfriend. My husband's friends and family always teased him, saying he'd never find a girl who would put up with his baseball addiction and his memorabilia collection, and wouldn't you know, I insisted we leave our wedding reception early so we wouldn't miss the first pitch of the World Series. He will always know more about baseball than I do, but I know quite a bit about it, and we both love it equally. And by the way, Derek Jeter is not cute and the Yankees are not going to the World Series.

I'm from Venezuela, and I started rooting for the Oriles back in the sixties because they had Louie Aparicio (a fellow Venezuelan).

I'm still loyal to the Orioles, and they have two Venezuelans that are an important part of their line-up (Mora and Hernandez).

Because the Orioles are officially out of the post season, I like to watch other teams with Venezuelans on them, most notably:

Twins - Santana, Rincon and Silva
Yankees - Abreu and Cairo.
Tigers - Ordoñez, Guillen, Infante, Ledezma

As you can see, I have a lot of teams to root for!!!

the only reason people like the yankees is because they dont know any better. if they had a clue, they would know that the yankees havent won a world series in the 21st century.

I like the Yankees. Although I like the Sox and Indians, I still root for the Yanks because they have alot of players I respect. I also think the Tigers are trash.
