very high but not enough.

well, considering there are 150k troops? and 3,000 dead, that is about 4.5%?

injuries are close to 20,000, some very serious, so that is what, 7x that or around 28 or 30%?

To measure the correct death rate, for example in Iraq, you must find out the total number of soldiers who have gone over and come back, not just those over there at this moment. I really don't have that answer, it might be the 150,000 number given or it might be a bigger number.

A few months ago on Google Answers, some guy freaked out when he learned the death rate for all people in the military is actually lower than the death rate of the total US population. True!

This, of course, is because most people in the military are not in combat, and the civilian population includes older people dying of natural causes. But, it is still an interesting thing to note.

It depends on whose side you are on. American troops have the highest survival rate today ever enjoyed by soldiers, due to our advanced weapon systems. Probably less than 1% are killed or injured.

During the war Desert Storm (our first encounter with Iraq) the kill ratio was probably 1000:1 (Iraqis to Americans).

We (Americans) are VERY good at war. If we weren't concerned about collateral damage (civilian casualties) we could probably go to war without losing a single soldier.

A soldier never comes back from war - the war comes with them.

The fact of the matter we may never know. The republican administration is not counting the American soldiers of fortune who work for the United States. Tens of thousands of Americans have died working for contractors.

Did you know that there has never been a safer time in history to be a US soldier. That there are more americans killed by americans in the USA than by enemies overseas.

Nicole D, your math is wrong.

Using your figures: 150,000 soldiers, and 3,000 dead is a casualty rate of 2%.

20,000 hurt would mean an injury rate of less than 14%.

The casualties of World War II were suffered disproportionately by the various participants. This is especially true regarding civilian casualties. The following chart gives data on the casualties suffered by each country, along with population information to show the relative impact of losses.
