When I am on a roller coaster, and going down a big drop, I can't catch my breath. Does this happen to anyone else?

I've had it happen. It's just like when you stick your head out the window of a car that's going really fast. There's nothing wrong with it. Just make sure you don't go on a coaster that drops so far you won't have time to catch your breath! :-)

I can think of four possible explanations:
Maybe so much air is being blown at you so quickly that it pushes a lot of air into you and your body isn't used to that so it can't equalize the pressure.
Or your lungs automatically try to push out all the air that is being forcibly sent into them.
Or the G-force pressure being put on your body makes it feel like it's being squeezed and can't breathe too well.
Or you're screaming so much you can't breathe. :-)

When you down freefall from a roller coaster or anything else (like sky diving for example), it is effected by gravity. Basically your feeling weightlessness for a few seconds, and maybe to you it feel shocked as well. Same feeling when your going down an elevator, you feel lighter don't you?

when you go up an elevator you feel more heavier actually. Your mass stays the same but your weight fluctuates because of gravity.

March - Atlantis Adventure, Lotte World, Seoul, South Korea A 28 year old ride op fell to his death after riding under the influence of alcohol and not securing the restraint properly. That's bad! I have an interesting fact too! In Disneyland, Korea a kid dies in the ride " Space mountain" as he did not fasten his seat belt and was out of the track and fell on the steep floor in there. His parents threatened Disneyland that they will close it. God knows what will happen!! I hope they will not close it. One more: Very soon, a six fags in gonna close back soon. That's sad. I am done!! Hope you enjoyed! Aki

Basically it's the air pressure pressing on your lungs, so it's tougher to fill up completely.

Since you can't fill em up all the way so easily, you feel out of breath!

That, and if you get an awesome coaster that takes your breath away for its pure beauty! :-)

Hope that helps!

Could be that you are suffering from an anxiety attack. Some people are deathly afraid of heights or of falling and that is one way it can manifest- state of shock or paralysis.
