Go to your local library and see what kind of reference books they have. Most libraries have the Yeoman "Red Book" for US coins and the "Standard Catalog of World Paper Money" published by Krause. That will get you a general idea of what you have.

I would go to ANA's website and search for the nearest coin club. Coin club members are coin collectors not dealers, and can help you out with education and let you know which dealers in your area are honest. The website is:
