For an athlete for instance, I mean his passion for his sports is really great but what about his passion for his lover. I am not only asking which one is greater for a person who is in true love but also asking what is the difference of feeling between them.(only serious comments, nothing like sex, etc.)

If you're involved with a sports nut, forget about being number one. There's no competition. His passion for a you will always run second, at best, to his passion for sports. Get used to it. His true love is sports.

Sometimes there's correlation between having passion for another person vs passion for something you love doing. Other times there is virtually no correlation between relationship-based passion and goal-based passion.

That's because having passion for a person (a lover perhaps) is founded on one's desire to love and to be loved. This type of passion can be quantified as love and relationship based... and is present due to one's quest to satisfy needs of love and belongingness. A passion for sports, or perhaps a goal or a hobby of some sort, is often driven by one's desire to fullfill a need for knowledge or an intellectual or physical challenge. Both types of passion can be mapped to Maslow's Heirarchy of Needs. In many cases, the two types of passion are virtually unrelated.

However, there may a logical explanation as to why some people are passionate about everything they do ~ including how they behave in a relationship with their lover. Some people are excellent at devoting 100% of their attention to the matter at hand... whether that be a ballgame, or even a night out with their mate. While some people may quantify this behavior as compulsive, in many cases it is merely that the individual has a remarkable talent of being able to devote their full concentration on the matter at hand.

You question was very thought provoking... and I enjoyed rationalizing the topic. Thanks!

There are a lot of factors that go along with this. Not to be taken lightly! Both are very important to the point of making you feel unimportant at times, but that is not the way I think he really feels. If his sport were alive, it might feel the same way. The important thing is in his deviding his attention properly. When he is with you he needs to put the sport out of his mind and focus his attention to you so that you are the subject of importance at the time. When it's time for sports, he has a job to do, though and if he has to practice you must take that into consideration or he will see it as "you are not being fair".

If there is a bad balance and refusal to compromise, you two may want to re-think your relationship. Doesn't mean you have to break it off, just re-evaluate where you want it to go. I hope this helped! Wish you well!

It's more a matter of semantics than psychology. For starters, the word "passion" actually comes from the verb meaning "to suffer" (Latin "patior"). So passion originally meant suffering; it was adapted to its modern romantic/sexual meaning because lovers are said to suffer when they are denied the object of their passion.

Once passion lost its strict meaning as "suffering" and took on the implied meaning of "burning desire," it was extended to any activity, interest or occupation about which someone has a deep and compelling interest. As you say, athletes talk about their passion for the game; the late Steve Irwin always described himself as passionate about conservation. I'm sure that his passion for his wife Terri was very different from his passion for his crocodiles, in expression if not necessarily in intensity. :-)

As for which is greater, passion for a lover versus passion for a sport/cause/etc., I would suspect that this varies on a person-to-person basis. One key difference is that romantic or sexual passion tends to ebb and flow over time; we talk of someone feeling passionate about a spouse or lover (most often because "passion" is being used as a sort of euphemism for "sexual attraction" rather than as a strict definition), but much of the time they are able to go through their daily lives without interaction in any way that could be called passionate. On the other hand, someone who is passionate about a cause often finds that THIS form of "passion" is distinguished by its permanence, rather than by its impermanence.
