I once head the Welsh singer Charlotte Church say that when she met President Bush she told him that she came from Wales and he asked her which state Wales was in.

So I was wondering, is there a place in America called Wales and if there is, which state is it in?

President Bush was making a light joke. Everyone in America, including the President, knows perfectly well where Wales is. Half the signatories of the Declaration of Independence were Welsh. The world renowned and most famous American President, Mr Abraham Lincoln, was Welsh, his parents moved from Wales to become farmers in USA. The Welsh simply blend in and unlike the Irish and other lesser race groups, do not usually proclaim themselves as Welsh but are, like Americans of English descent, content to call themselves, Americans.

Have relatives in Philadelphia - and towards the north east of Pennsylvania, there are towns that have Welsh names - due to Welsh Quakers buying 40,000 acres of land in the state. Bala is a town in Penn. named after the one in Wales in around 1680 - Baptists also from Wales settled on the outskirts of Phila., buying more acres around the Delaware river.
Come on...President Bush is half awake all of the time!

I live near a town named Cardiff... which I believe is the capital of Wales. I guess it's not a "New Wales" or anything. I would imagine there are a lot of towns and regions with similar names from when we were colonies. It depends on who or where the first Briton to settle that area named it. I also live near a Liverpool, Manchester, Worcester, etc. As far as the Bush comment goes, he probably didn't hear her accent or something.

He actually said "what state is it in" to which the answer should have been pretty bad really, but with intellects like charlotte with her impeccable taste in "men" and and george with his encyclopaedic knowledge of the whereabouts of all weapons of mass destruction, the misinterpretational probabilities regarding the language problems with welsh vis a vis merican made such a misunderstanding almost inevitable.
