I have no idea how to use an Apple but they look cool and I think now is as good a time as ever to learn about them. But if I get a PC, all my programs on my desktop will work on it and it's more compatible with the school I go to. What should I purchase.

This adivce is coming from someone who uses Macs and PCs on a daily basis. Both sides have unique positives. The Mac is highly tailored for photo editing, graphic design, and video editing. The PC has a hard time keeping up to the Mac in the art category. A PC has the advantage of being compatible with almost everything on the market. If you want to do any gaming, definately get a PC. If you need applications for all sorts of corporate tasks (VPN, mailbox, etc) then the PC is the way to go. The business end of things is better run on a PC. I have seen both types of systems hang and crash on numerous occasions, almost on a daily basis. I will tell you that the Mac's crashes are much more annoying though, as Apple has little experience "autosave if it crashes" backup. The argument that Apple is impenetrable from viruses is no longer true. As more and more people buy Macs, virus writers will move on to attack OS X as well. It is all a matter of perspective. If you are a fairly advanced computer user and know how to work it well, buy a PC.

If you want compatibility you should use a PC. I know the new Apples have Intel processors but you have to pay a lot more for it and it doesn't really work that well for Windows programs

look into who ever offers what you are looking for (ram size, video card, internal dvd burner)even after knowing what i wanted and needed to support my vista ,i forgot internal dvd burner,it is something i very rarely use,so when i had dell build this computer,i did not even think to have it put in.write down features you want installed on laptop, but remember, you can only increase ram memory and video card only a certain amount,i found that out the hard way,my notebook is windows xp,my new desktop is windows vista, just take your time and you will find the perfect laptop.
