The entire motor has to be disassembled.
First it has to be removed from the bike.
Before you can split (open) the casing (crankcase) both cylinders have to be removed.
This is not a job for a beginner.
It's an 8hr job working non stop by someone that knows what they're doing.
You can't change the cross shaft without splitting the crankcase.

You need a large impact driver with a large phillips bit on the tip
the type of impact you hit with a hammer are only 15 bucks.
a complete set of allen bits and a Honda shop manual.
The output gear shaft would be cheaper if you could find a used one. I hate to think what Honda would charge for a shaft inside the transmission. Maybee $300 bucks for the shaft alone?

It is a heavy duty repair, basically they have the pull the engine out and take the bottom end apart to get to the gears. I had an 86 shadow 500 about 18 years ago and 3rd gear went out after about 20k miles.

before you're taking your carbs aside - it truly is the 2d position i ought to look - next time it does it, pull over at a secure position positioned your ear down by making use of the gasoline cap and open it. If air sucks into the tank, your vent line is plugged. clean it out and your will be able to bypass. If it truly is not any longer it, and also you've eradicated the clear out(s) and the petcock, bypass after the carbs.
