We may be able to program cars to drive themselvs to the police if stolen. Or to simply stop, and send out a silent alarm to the police and the alarm company.
Safety will be an interesting problem, or set of problems. We may see anomalies or "accidents" where people are taken to the wrong destinations, or locked in their vehicles. Or even more interesting, that the vehicle starts and drives away without the operator. We may have situations where children are taken away while parents step out to do an errand.

Seven years ago they said these cars were about seven years away. Infact they did a test in like 1995 with some cars on a special highway.
It could be done now. But it won't.
People like controlling their own vehicle. They don't trust turning it over to a machine. Unless the government forces it, it won't happen. And since the people elect the government, it's not happening.

If we can get in and program the destination, and the car can automatically avoid hazards / obstacles / accidents then people can set it for 'work' or 'shopping' and either take a nap or surf the internet, read, or whatever until they get where they want to go.
No more drunk driving charges, no more grisly accidents, fewer paramedics will be needed, tickets and traffic court will be eliminated, no need for driver's licenses or driving school, no more speed limit signs, and the elderly, children or even the blind would be able to 'drive'.

Yes...I am specifially thinking the frustration of those involved in "road rage." They'll have to get up early and that will just kill them to have to do that.
