A and M refers to Agricultural and Mechanical. When the Lincoln-Morrill Act declared that each state should have a state university to service all of its residents, it was mostly done so that farmers could receive access to information for their crops and livestock. The better our agricultural landscape, the better our national landscape. These land-grant universities all have an Extension service that still works to deseminate information from the University to the general public. In Texas, A&M is the land-grant school. Some states, like Kentucky, have two land-grant school to accomodate the then recently freed slaves. So in Kentucky, Kentucky State in Frankfort and the University of Kentucky are the two land-grant schools.
