It was great! Even more subtle was the implication that maybe bigwigs from the press and the administration shouldn't be shmoozing with each other; the press should be putting his feet to the fire!

I agree with both David and Jared in the responses thus far. The Stephen Colbert lampoon was brilliantly done---so well done, in fact, that most Republicans did not realize right away this was a "roasting" until Colbert made the reference to Bush being "the same on Wednesday as he is on Monday, no matter what happens on Tuesday" (9/11 occurred on Tuesday). I missed part of the Colbert schtick, and so went to C-SPAN where the event was recorded and this is when I became a real fan of Stephen Colbert (pronounced "Colbear" with a silent T). Rush Limbaugh is bloated with self-loathing and has so many personal foibles that would be opened to "roasting" that I truly doubt he would be willing to participate even if asked. I would have also enjoyed seeing Jon Stewart, Lewis Black, or Bill Maher as guest speakers. Jay Leno was NOT funny...he seems to have lost his edge in comedic circles.

he did a great job. really gutsy though. I am not convinced there really is freedom of speech without repercussions- most times it sems like the comittment to freedom and democracy is skin deep - a good line to talk until the freedoms and democratic wishes start running counter to the entrenched interests.

Indeed. It was all the more hilarious because Bush thought he was being applauded -- he didn't get the "subtle" point at all.

Aided by the fact that I don;t think Bush "got it".

Of course he did. I just find it hard to believe they let him in. Don't they watch the show??
