I would say "Assalamu Alilkum Wa Rahmatulah Wa Barakatuh" and extend my hands to him to shake.
Whether or not he accepts my greeting is up to him. But as long as he accepts it and responds in kind, we can talk normally. Otherwise I am sure there would be instant bloodshed.
BTW, for those wondering, the above is the proper way to greet him before asking any type of questions of any kind - any other way and, well, instant bloodshed.
And do not expect him to rise to greet you either. Since he is sitting, you have to greet him first.
