In the original movie, Danny leads him to the maze outside and when he (Danny) is far enough ahead of Jack, he back steps into his footprints and Jack gets lost and freezes to death...Danny was the only one who knew how to get out of the maze.
In the updated mini series, Dick Hallorann, doesn't die and Jack blows up with The Overlook. Jack was supposed to dump the boiler every night and when the spirits took over him, he forgot...Danny remembered and at the last minute Jack realized what was going on. He told Danny and Wendy to get out and they take Dick with them...The last scene was of Danny's graduation and Dick shows up to watch.
The grown up Danny is actually "Tony" and we learn that his full name was Daniel Anthony Torrance...Jack's spirit is there when Danny graduates and the only ones who can see him are Danny and Dick...
I haven't read the book in about 20 years, but I think the tv version was closer to how the book ended.
