Do what I did when I was there. Learn how to use the subway, get some tokens and go where ever you need to be.
"But did he ever return?
No, he never returned,
and his fate is still unlearned
(poor Old Charlie)
He may ride forever neath the streets of Boston
He's the man who never returned."

If you are planning to go to Salem - then don't stay in Boston! you will be dealing with commuter traffic!!! If you can't find a hotel in Salem or Marblehead, try the many hotels and Motels on Route 1 Danvers, Peabody or Beverly. There should be some openings there and much easier to drive to Salem. If you want to see Boston - take the train from Salem (35 minutes) and save on parking ($25-$30/day). If you take the train to Salem - you can walk everywhere (Halloween and tourist stuff) from the Salem train station.

The traffic won't be too bad to Salem from Boston, because if you're going there in the AM, and returning at night you'll be going the opposite direction of the worst of the rush hour traffic. You could also always just try to avoid peak driving times. Honestly, the train isn't that frequent to Salem, and is a very long ride. You could check it out at www.mbta.com and see what you think of the schedule, etc. But I think driving is much easier, in my personal opinion.

I live in Boston, and to go from the airport to North Station to Salem would be a big pain in the neck.
If you wish to use public transportation , I suggest that you stay at a hotel near North Station. Commuter Rail trains run frequently between North Station and Salem. The trip takes about 30 minutes.
Here is the schedule for the Newbury/Rockport line, which is the one you need: http://www.mbta.com/traveling_t/schedules_commuterrail_sched.asp?sched_day=Weekday&sched_type=Inbound&line=rockport&x=33&y=5

hi live near Boston , try this link http://www.pricerighthotels.com/hotels/Salem/MA/USA/?sid=4&campaignID=85&subAffiliateID=1085 the train goes out of north station and its not a long ride. Logan airport is not that far from North station so even a hotel near the airport is fine. Salem is great this time of year as haloween is approaching

Stay at the Natick Hampton Inn. It's great. Also, the car rental companies are actually quite cheap. (I rent a car there every two weeks, trust me.) I like Alamo, but they are quite slow in service, but Hertz, Dollar, and Enterprise are also good, although Hertz is pretty expensive.

Do what you must. This is a good learning adventure for the both of you. If you do it well, just think of how much better it will be next time.
