In terms of popularity over a lifetime of entertaining, Frank Sinatra is hard to beat. Elton John has a chance. Al Jolson had a great run but was not a consistent as Frank. Elvis may yet win including post-mortem popularity.

Great how? Are we talking technical ability, or someone who felt the music, who sang from the heart and not the head? Being able to sing in tune isn't enough, anyone can do that. For instance, Shane Macgowan of The Pogues - not the greatest singer in a technical sense, but he lives and breathes the music! Most modern pop/r'n'b/soul singers sound bored to me (Gabrielle, Ashanti, and all of your Pop Idol types are the worst!), none of them have the raw passion and emotion of Aretha Franklin, Dusty Springfield, Freddie Mercury, or even Morrissey!
