Jimmy Snuka was, in fact, the first. He and Sam Bullemo (or something like that) won two separate battle royals to determine the two top contenders for the Eastern Championship Wrestling world title, and Snuka beat the other guy to be crowned the federation's first champion.
Shane Douglas would later go on to win the NWA tile but threw the belt down and proclaimed himself ECW Champion, giving the belt world championship status.

If u r referring eastern championship wrestling then immy "superfly" snuka was world champion, if u were referring to extreme, then it was Shane "the Franchise" Douglas

i think that would have been the immortal jimmy superfly snuka.
but i know that the von ericks were the champions 25 years ago too.
wcw had a lot of talent that has been forgotten. its a shame really.

They are all wrong...The first ECW world Champion was the Franchise Shane Douglas !!!!...back in 1993 he threw down what was once the NWA title and Declared he was the NEW ECW CHAMPION !!! I WATCHED IT ON TV... those other guys are wrong.!!!!!!!!!!!

jimmy snuka on april 25,1992 only to lose it to johnny hot body on april 26. 1992...---shane douglas was the 8th.
