Have you tried www.travelocity.com or www.aaa.com? Also, if your credit card has a rewards points mileage program, you can get a discount towards your ticket or even a free ticket if you have enough points. Note however that you must purchase your ticket through your rewards program phone number or web site. Check with your bank's web site for details.

San Jose, California, or San Jose, Costa Rica, or another San Jose? Advice will be different depending which San Jose you need. Edit your question to include this info and you'll probably get much better advice.
---------updated
Ok, so it's San Jose, Costa Rica. Run your itinerary through Booking Buddy, then break up the trip at Miami or Orlando, and try JetBlue (or whoever is cheapest) to Florida, and from Florida try German airline LTU to CR, or Dutch airline Martinair. Those two often have very good deals in the off-season.

when traveling abroad i have found that if u fly with the countries major airline its usually cheapest and they dont charge you for big bags (surf bags, fishing poles etc). when i travel central america and especially costa i always fly TACA airlines. go to there site and gauranteed its the best. they only charge $100 to change the departure date too... incase you dont want the fun to end

Hello:
Check out http://www.grab2travel.com
Go to Flights section.
Also try to do SmartSearch, which will give you recommendation and click on individual buttons to perform search to compare rates. I like that place... You dont have to go to individual sites and type the same information again and again.. here once you enter you are done to compare....
