Birth control pills can cause heart attack, stroke and blood clots in anyone taking them. However, your risk of heart disease increases when you smoke because smoking leads to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and inhibits blood flow. The risk for heart disease ALSO increases as you age. So, the recommendation for all birth control pills, the patch or the ring is that it NOT be prescribed for women over age 35 who smoke because of this COMBINED risk. However, regardless of age, you should not smoke while taking the pill because of these risks. Always talk to your healthcare provider so he/she can make sure you don't have any other health conditions that would put you at increased risk for these side effects.

No, you should stop smoking if you are taking bbirth control pills. irth control pills increase your chance of stroke. Smoking causes your veins to lose elasticity, causes more plaque to build up in the veins and arteries, which can lead to stroke. If you ar on birth control, you already increase your risk. Either a small piece of the plaque can come loose and get stuck somewhere else in your circulatory system, causing clot, or the buildup could restrict the blood flow causing a blood clot. If that blood clot is in your brain, it is a stroke, and cause serious, permanent brain damage.
It is dangerous to have two increased risk factors.

no you shouldn't, it increases heart problems, blood clots, etc.... read the insert in your birth control pills, it will give you every risk involved with smoking and birth contol. Many women smoke and take birth control, but the risks arent worth it.

The TV ads mention that the pill increases the risk of blood clots, heart attack and stroke.Smoking increases the risk even further particularly in women over 30.(smoking also increases your risk of blood clots, heart attack and stroke without the pill.) I don't know the exact reason why there is a increased risk though.

Smoking increases the risk of blod clots, which can kill you. When they say "women who are pregnant or smoke should not use" that means you, too.

Nope. Your doctor should have told you about the risks. If not, get another doctor.
