Depends upon state & local law & who you want to have marry you. In my town you both go to the Court clerk's office; pay a fee; fill out the license application & ask if someone there will perform the ceremony. They take you to a private office with a witness; say the statutory words, the witness & the clerk sign & date the application/which thereby becomes your marriage license & give you a certified copy.

In fact, in my town it's the same Clerk's desk where you get a certified copy of your divorce judgment after the judge signs it in court. So you can you can make your second mistake within minutes of, and in the same place where you undid your first!

Here in Indiana, you apply for your marriage license at the County Clerk's office. You can also have your marriage performed by the clerk.

I was able to attend one of these weddings a couple weeks ago. I was in the courtroom waiting for court to start, and the County Clerk popped her head in to ask how long before we were going to start our court session so that she could perform a quick wedding. There was enough time available, so I was able to witness the wedding for the couple. They requested a prayer during the wedding, so the Clerk said a prayer, then held the ceremony. If there hadn't been time for the ceremony, the clerk was going to perform the ceremony in front of a nice stone carving in the lobby. The courtroom, with all it's wood trim was a beautiful setting, though.

(I was in court since I'm a probation officer and go to all court appearances by the juveniles on my case load.)

Try starting with your local county courts and ask where you go from there.

You have to get a marriage license first and then a blood test. (to determine syphillis or HIV). No you just don't show up anywhere...you make arragnement ahead of time.

No mention of a church here. Why bother at all?
