Visit a lactation consultant or go to a La Leche Meeting where lots of moms are nursing. It's hard to explain how to get the baby to open wide enough, but you are right... if they are just sucking on the nipple and not taking more of the breast into the mouth, it is painful!
Best wishes to you

Find a local Lactation Consultant. There may be a reason that he's not latching on properly. If not, she'll be able to show you how to fix the problem. If you're in too much pain there are nipple shields to help you, although those arn't strongly suggested, they're far better than giving up.

*actually* in case your little plausible stick their tongue out previous their decrease lip and the better lip is quite cellular then he's not tongue tied. attempt sticking your tongue out and see in case your son will reproduction you *lol* even if it really is getting gradually painful in the course of the day or you're starting to be blisters you should quite see a lactation representative. until eventually then merely attempt diverse positions even as nursing. each and every each and every now and then a diverse position can make latching a lot less complicated. although, and some lactation specialists will disagree with me. some little ones desire a nasty latch which could be exciting. My son hates issues touching his face round his lips. you have to be certain how he used to suck his thumb. It change right into a consistent conflict or maybe now he dosn't quite take adequate into his mouth.

My wife says to touch the nipple to the baby's lips, and don't give it to him until the mouth is open wide enough. He'll get the idea.

a lot of times if you stoke their cheek they will open their mouth really wide. that's what worked for my son. there is also a club called the "leche" club (i'm pretty sure i spelled that wrong) and they will help you through any breast feeding problems.

Tickle nipple on his bottom lip and plop him on only when it's at it's widest. Keep on rubbing his lip and he'll get the hint. If he's on and it hurts, take him off right away and try try try again. Good Luck... he'll get the hang of it !

Have you pushed your nipple area gently into his mouth? They need so much help at first sometimes.
Call your local La Leche League volunteer. It can help soooo much.

He probably won't. If he doesn't have it by now, he might not get it. It's not all to uncommon. And it doesn't mean there is any thing wrong. If it's not working for either one of you, maybe you should try formula. I'd suggest pumping, but you'd be pumping all day to get enough to fill him up. You could also try large nipples on the bottles to see if he gets the idea.

Fill baby bottles with your mother's milk and feed him through the bottle. I'm no expert on this topic , but I know it can be done.. and is done. Good Luck ! :)
