I will try to answer all your questions. I know about Cancun because I live here.

1.- Yes, If you are a US citizen you have to have a passport to visit Cancun.
2.- Cancun is AWESOME. White sandy beaches are espectacular really. Also there´s alot of activities to do here. You can visit the Mayan Ruins (My favorites are Chichen Itza which is about 3 hours from Cancun by bus which by the way is unexpensive, and the other is Tulum which is about 2 hours away).

Another thing you might want to try is visiting Xcaret which is a themed park that has underwater rivers, aquarium (with Dolphins and yes, you can swim with them for about 70 US) and a live Mayan show, followed by another show of typical Mexican music from all states. Xcaret is located at the beach so you can also take a swim in natural pools.

Another place I would recommend, specially if you´re traveling as a couple is Tulum. Tulum is a city located south of Cancun (about 2 hours). It has under my humble opinion, the most beautiful beaches. I recommend Tulum because it has very romantic villas by the sea.

If you´re the party kind, you should also try Cancun hotel zone discos like the famous Coco Bongo, Hard Rock cafe, Mr. Frogs, Daddy O and The City, which claims to be the biggest disco in the world.

If you like to explore the maya world, I also recommend Xbalamque Hotel, a Mayan themed - economy priced hotel in Downtown Cancun.

Hope this answer helps.

Cancun is a blast. As of January 8, 2007, you will need a passport to go anywhere in Mexico.
Take a bus trip to the Mayan ruins and to a water park where you can swim with the fish.
Have a great time.

A passport is not needed now. Starting the first of 2008, you will need a passport to go anywhere outside of the U.S.
