It would be between emmitt, sanders, Payton, and brown. Emmitt wasn't the most elusive back neither most powerful, but he was consistent. Barry Sanders was very elusive and had moves out of this world, he was hard to take down. Payton was a overall good back, he was also consistent, but Jim Brown totally dominated when he was playing no one could stop him in his days. The best back......Barry Sanders, if he would've kept playing he would own those rushing records, not emmitt smith.

Walter Payton. Emmit Smith had an excellent offensive line in front of him. There are probably 2 or 3 potential HOF's on that line. Payton had an effective line, but nobody the likes of Larry Allen or Mark Stepnoski in front of him.

Just ask yourself a simple question...who's highlight reel would be the most entertaining to watch? Easy. Barry Sanders.

Also, Barry got his yards DESPITE the Lions woeful offensive lines...He got his yards when everyone knew he was getting the ball...unlike Emmitt, who had Aikman, Irvin, Novachek and Moose Johnston to take the pressure off, as well as one of the greatest collections of offensive lineman in the history of the NFL. Could Emmitt have gotten his yards in Detroit? NO WAY. Could Barry have gotten his yards in Dallas? EASY. He would have gotten well over 20,000.

Walter Payton -- If he had the Offensive line that Emmitt Smith had with the Cowboys imagine how many more yards Sweetness would have.. Most of his yards were after he was hit for the first time.. Imagine what Walter be saying if he had the Cowboys Offensive line on his side when he played??? Dam now thats blocking for the running back.........

Barry Sanders, regardless of what his JackAss father says! He had the moves and breakaway speed like nobody else. Emmit Smith was lucky that he retired soon (and I, as a lifelong Lions' fan, didn't blame him for wanting out of such a rinky dink organization). He was the greatest!
