I think it is because the music pumps you up and gives you adrenaline which you wouldn't have if you didn't listen to it.

What do you think?

personally i think not, everyone runs differently. But some run faster while listening to their favorite song or some listen to other stuff and some just dont listen at all. But i dont think its cheating, it just helps some, maybe not others.

It may be.

Generally, it is considered cheating to use a device that helps you control your pace. Since a mp3 player can be used like that, it will not be allowed in most competitions. However, your local 5k fun run shouldn't care.

I have heard that some states are considering banning watches in high school xc and track meets due to the advances made.

It all depends. If you are training for a race then you should not be listening to music since you will not be able to replicate the same running conditions during a race. Your body will get used to running with the rhythim, and you will most likely not run as well as you can.

However, if you are running to stay in shape and you are running in a traffic free place then running with music can be a great motivational tool.

No, it's not cheating...It can be a great motivator.

Just be sure that you can still hear around you (oncoming cars, muggers, etc.).
