I find French people to be polite, courteous, and helpful. We ( and I don't mean me here ) dislike them becasue they have a good family life, a sense of belonging in their communities, they fight for good conditions in the workplace, don't take crap from their government, and their work/home lives well balanced and we don't, so basically we're jealous.....just my opinion.

As the other answerers have said the fact that we were at war with France for so many years doesn't help. Ridiculous as it sounds it's a tradition - it's not that people really dislike each other but dissing each other is something we traditionally do. The English say 'stupid frogs' and the French like to say that they are better than us and that they are superior to everyone - look at Edith Cresson making a statement about English men - and she was their prime minister! I have French friends myself, so I know that the French can be very nice. But we all nave to acknowledge that the 'dislike' is a two way thing. I think that neighbouring countries are often disparaging about one another. Aussie and Kiwi friends both like to diss the other country for example.

I've ~always~ felt welcome when I've visited France. But then, although my French linguistic skills are almost non-existent, I do make the effort to try and speak the language. Many people go out there assuming everyone will be happy to speak English with them; this is not always the case.
I think the French have more pride in themselves and their heritage - we have let ours go. They are more politically involved and fight for their rights as French citizens. I wish we were a lot more like them.
I'm English, and I like the French more than I do the up-coming generation of Brits. So much so, I'm hoping to be able to retire there!

Im scottish/ english and i like french people. I used to have french pen pals when i was younger, and was friends with a girl who was from France when i was at school. Why do you think english people dont like french, what was you experience.
The only thing i can think of and it's really stupid, but we are forced to learn french at school.
I honestly do not have clue why this may be the case. Is there ever a reason for these things

I'm English and I have a very close french friend, I think you are being stereotypical. The french and english have a long standing feud, but we actually get along better than alot of other nationalities.

If English people don't like the French in general it's because they are envious and inhibited and most of the time hypocrites. This is exactly what the French are not. Salut.

wait are you English or British? I have a British passport the language I speak is English...
we have always been at war with the french, historically, not actually recently I admit... I have a dislike for them after they wouldnt stop selling exocet missiles to the argentine and then we lost a lot of ships and men to them... they were even shipping them to the argies after the hostility started, Maggie asked not to but they said it was part of an old contract...oh thats ok then... so nice of them to do that wasn't it? how nice to have allies like that?

YOUR ANSWER:
Hundred Years War. (England against France)
"The story of the English waving their fingers at the French is told in the first person account by Jean Froissart" (wikipedia)
That's how the middle finger became a bad sign in our culture.

It's not just the english and the french.
You will find this throughout europe and the world - nations hating neighbouring nations. I think that it is the human ego's nature to see faults in others but itself, and when the ego is a collective one of a whole country this is multiplied.
Watch spectators at a football game to see a compacted version of it... How easy it is for one nation to go to war with another...
