Its good to have hope but what this is saying is that you cant just hope everything works out. For example, if you are lost in the wilderness, you cant just sit there and go I hope I dont starve and I hope someone finds me; Instead you have to look for a way out or look for something to hunt... You cant hope without the effort.

You must have hope but not live on it. Just hoping doesn't make it so. If you just hope for a job and don't do anything about it, you will not get a job. If the North American Indians just hoped they would find food to feed themselves, they would have died - fast.

This is a self explanatory saying. One can't eat HOPE, or pay the bills with HOPE, or take care of the kids with HOPE, etc. It's basically saying that you have to take action rather than sitting around and wishing and hoping for the rest of your life, or the end or your life will be soon.

It means, one must act, to extend life,
If you rest on hope, what are you suppose to do but to wait the end and then it comes fast, cause there were no resistance.

It means the same thing as "The Lord helps those who help themselves." It means you have to be proactive in getting what you need. Neither hope or prayer alone can accomplish the steps necessary to get things done.

You can't sit around and just HOPE that things will get better or that you wil have food to eat or whatever. You have to get out there and make things happen.

i think it means that if you live on hope and u base life on hope, your hopes will be crushed and therefore you will die on the inside.

It means that you create your own destiny. You can't blindly just hope things will work out for you.
