The tax base in districts determines how much funding public schools receive. In our area the property taxes are much higher in the suburbs, so the schools do get funded better than the ones in the inner city and rural areas. I don't agree with this, I think the money should be spead out throughout the state. It's sort of crazy that some schools are like beautiful college campuses and other total dumps. I saw this first hand on a trip to Southern IL. I have also, heard a lot of complaints about inner city schools not have enough desks and supplies for the students. I think the solution is to spread the taxe base out, so that the poorier districts can make improvements, thus giving the lower income people better schools.
A person's starting point in life does determine things for the most part, of course there are acceptions. If you come from a poor family and are gifted and have a supportive family, then you have a real shot of making it into the upper middle class. However, a poor average person with a supportive family would have to get a few breaks and work much harder. Now, think about an average or below average person, with no family support, what the odds of someone "pulling themselves up"? Some do, so don't get me wrong and they deserve a lot of credit! Sometimes, it's really easy for the advangaged to critize, how far in life could you go if you had a horrible family and lived in a poor area? Could you pull youself up by the boot straps? I realize there is no way of knowing, but just keep that in mind, when you tell some kid from the hood or some poor rural area to just work hard and study.
It's not just an issue for minorities, it's an issue for all poor working class people. Affirmative action doesn't address this, because it is a program designed to make up for past discrimination, so poor whites are discriminated against, because of racial preferance. A fairer progarm would be a based on income. I still think there should be programs to help minority students, though. There are still racial issues in this country, and we are not color blind.

yes, you are correct. unfortunately there does not seem to be anything we can do about it. The only other thing to do is to have more than a two-party system. and what's up with the smear campaigns? I mean, can't this money be put to better use than to make another candidate look like an incompetent fool?
I hate the "you'll just be throwing your vote away" excuse. If we all voted in a different way, we could make a differnce in the kind of people that hold office in this nation. People need to be a little more educated.
And, the reason that these "rich" schools get so much money is so they can continue to breed "tomorrow's leaders." Keeping this two-party system alive and well. while poor schools breed the next generations non-voters/ welfare moms/ dads...sad but true.
this is how our world is kept in a certain order...rich on top, poor on welfare (resented by the rich man)...

You got it all wrong and just come out sounding bitter and twisted, like you didn't get your chance or something. It's all about making choices. Some you win, some you lose, it just happens that way. If your mum and dad made the choice, or took the decision, to be a bit harder on you when you were young, made you work a bit harder, save a bit more money, study a bit harder, and so on all down the line, things would have been a lot different, and it's the same way for everyone. It's does no good now to start whining about there being no all purpose safety net, you know very well that communism doesn't work, the information is all out there and if mums and pops the world over can't be bothered to make that informed decision, then there really is no one to blame but themselves. OK? Sorry to sound a bit tougher than you expected but I hope there's more people out there that will read this than you.

Get off the minority kick. Poor people of all races are treated the same. But other than that you're right, except that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. This is because the rich are in the position of making and changing laws that restrict their ability to make more money.

It's a myth that anyone can pull himself up by the bootstraps. A person has so many strikes against him being born poor: inferior schools, poor nutrition that can undermine mental development, environment not conducive to development and learning, the list goes on. There is even prejudice against the poor, so it is harder for a poor person to get good jobs, entry into good colleges.
Admitted, some people do manage to advance their economic level, but they are the minority.

the only people that escape poverty are those that are in the top 5 percent in intelligence... for the most part...
so, that's 95 percent that are just screwed...
then republicans tout the top 5 percent that made it and say "see anyone can do it!"
80 percent of wealth is inherited, and the majority of the rest of the wealth is gained by those in the upper middle class that get the advantages of great educations and support, from being upper middle class...

the system is run by those in power. those in power tend to be the rich. the rich want it to stay that way but to have the poor THINK they can become rich.

It's true!
Our so called "middle class" is shrinking. And we are being conned. The reason all our bosses (all the way up the President) allow themselves to be called by their first names to imply that they are Average Joe's just like us. Tsk!
