Are you referring to ammonia? If so, NH3 is the chemical formula. The aqueous solution (in water) releases the gaseous NH3. This is very unpleasant to your nose not to mentioned that it may catch fire when you lit your fireplace. Why don't you use other cleaning agents? Unscrew the screen and bring it to your driveway. Then experiment what type of cleaning agents that will do the job. It is easier to hose down the cleaning agent in your driveway.
Good Luck.
