Like the swinging pendulum of life, Justice is the meting out of measure for measure the Law of Cause and Affect.
Vengeance, on the other hand, is a EGO trip that blinds reason, and becomes Judge, Jury, and Executioner of personal judgment, and not the Letter of the Law.

The dictionary definitions don't really do justice to the tone of this question, I think.
Simply put, "justice" is the fair or reasonable way to treat people while "vengeance" is what *you think* is the fair or reasonable way to treat someone who has done something what *you think* was wrong. There lies the diference- in the motive of your endeavour.
Justice unlike vengeance is unbiased and strikes with the same force in all the directions.
But, there arises an important question- What defines justice? How can the court of Justice be sure whether its stand is unbiased or not? Who is to say that the supposed good encompasses more merit than the supposed bad?
Isn't the justice subjective?
Take religion for example. There are different rules and codes of conduct set for women and men in different religions and cultures. What's crime in one culture, is followed religiously in another. On neutral grounds, whose side should justice take? How can you refute a community's way of thinking or acting?
I think the answer lies in the question itself. Justice shouldn't take sides. By definition, justice is unbiased... and *fair*. We all have common sense notions of what's fair and what's not eg. when someone slaps you for no reason, it isn't fair and justice would be to punish the offender. In the same way, treating the fairer sex as inferior under the name of *any* religion is unfair and justice would be to create equality among genders.
Both "justice" and "vengence" are blind. The difference lies in the degree of "blindness". Justice is completely blind while vengeance has a slight eyesight left to visualise its selfish purpose and keep it in mind while at work.
Justice at work however, is more sensible and sane.
I hope this answer did justice to your question.

Justice is a Goddess. Vengeance is a -- sort of rhymes with "rich."
Justice is far more than retribution for crimes, after all. It involves the resolution of disputes in civil law, and it involves the protection of the law for our Constitutional rights, all of which are far more significant than whether a given law-breaker goes to jail or not. Vengeance, in contrast, is bloodthirsty, usually on the firm conviction that She is justified. This may or may not be the case in any sort of judgment, but it is the passion with which retribution is sought that makes it vengeance.
Consistently, victims and the families of victims report that vengeance is a fleeting sense, but the long-term goal is to prevent anyone else having to go through what they went through. In other words, to stop the probability that the wrong-doer will do it again if he is not punished. That's not hot-blooded vengeance; that's recognition of the need for justice.
Justice, after all, can be tempered by Mercy. Vengeance cannot hear the word Mercy.

Justice implies restitution to the injured party as well as punishment for the perpetrator. Justice also implies an outside agency deals the verdict out. Vengeance implies the injured party takes revenge, and the emotional fulfillment of repaying harm with harm is the reward.

When justice is served, someone has recieved punishment for his actions...wether it's jail time or street justice. Vengence is when an individual goes past the "eye for an eye" theory...for example, jon murders ben's brother and in retaliation ben kill's jon, his wife and kids, where as it would have been justice to stop with jon...

Justice is the polar opposite of vengence, justice is truth while vengence is just... vengence. Which is based on untruths. One can benefit from justice yet one can also benefit from vengence, so in a way, they can be the same. It's just how you look at it, I suppose.
