He usually does it when he is hungry or sleepy. We have been working with him on sitting up. Could this be his muscles strenghtening or could it be something more serious? Has anyone seen this in their own children?

it is VERY common for babies to shake their heads back and forth. Relax Mom. Has baby been to the pediatrition? Tell the Doctor so that YOU can relax.

Here is a great web site....

My baby does this too, she started about 8 months old. I think she is just exploring her abilities. She sometimes does it and it seems like a response to interaction with her so she gets a lot of giggles from it. She eventually learned the word cue for it "no" then eventually learned to shake her head yes...on the word cue "yes"!!

This is my first baby, so my opinion is, he's just playing!!

yes!! My nephew does this!! Only when he is sleepy. it is perfectly fine.

Definitely tell your doctor anyway, because if it is involuntary it is not good. But the fact you are noticing it happening at specific times makes me think that it is done as a self -soothing thing.

Hey Vikki,
don't worry, my son still does it and I think he does it cause it relaxes him and he seems to do it before bed too!
Like everyone else said still tell your doc!
