The majority of actors will say that comedy is the hardest to perform - so if these stand-ups are already good at "in your face" comedy, they can most likely pull off any role if they are true actors - which Robin Williams is.

I think in order to be really funny when doing stand up, they have to be a little bit loony or "out there". So, basically, the psycho roles in films are their true personalities shining through.
