Is there a coating I can apply to the top of it to help it last or do I have to replace the concrete itself?

There are many specialized coatings and coverings out there unfortunatley they cost alot and only look good if your floor is still flat. Look on line under specialized concrete coatings and sealers.

id recommend using a concrete resurfacing product. they generally run 18-27 bucks a bag and can be finished to a nice looking surface. it also has glues in it for better cohesion. BUT if the surface of concrete is chipping away in large sections its likely that the original concrete mixture was faulty or it froze while it was being finished or right after, or it set too quickly. if any of these are true the resurfacer will likely not adhere to the existing concrete and it will also chip away in a few months. recommend consulting a contractor.

A few chips in the concrete can be filled with a very fine cement. Cost about 25.00 bag and you'll have to clean scrub the area very well.
The cement goes on smoothly and can be tapered. Otherwise, clean the entire surface of your garage floor and then apply a paint specifically for cement. It looks nice and wears well.

use a resurfacer to fill the cracks, then you can etch the concrete with a concrete cleaner/etcher and apply a polyurethane or concrete paint to coat the floor, and that will last you a while. i use a product called Polycoat.

It depends on how badly it is damaged. You might want to consult a professional. If you just try and repair, you might find it continues to crack because the part underneath the top is weakening. I would call in a professional.
