In computing, the acronym RAID (originally redundant array of inexpensive disks, now also known as redundant array of independent disks) refers to a data storage scheme using multiple hard drives to share or replicate data among the drives. Depending on the level chosen, the benefit of RAID is one or more of increased data integrity, fault-tolerance (The same information is stored on more than one drive, if one of the drives fails you still have your data), throughput (speed) or capacity (multiple drives functioning together as one huge drive) compared to single drives.

For a complete definition of RAID levels and their benefits, see the links below.

RAID stands for Redundant Array of Independent Disks, which means that you can convert several disk into one drive in order to protect your DATA, there are different levels of RAID, RAID 5 is the most popular, you need a minimum of 3 drives to create a RAID level 5. Many small business are building machines with RAID controllers to run their servers, this will prevent any downtime and such. RAID is awesome, even better if you use a high end RAID controller card.

Redundant Array of Independant Drives.

Built by geeks to use old drives, it saves files across several drives or 'mirrors', in duplicated sections of code, so that the failure of one or more drives does not mean the loss of data.

The files usually can be re-built, upon insertion of new drives to replace the damaged one(s).

Now, there are some ten different configurations that can be assembled. Runs really well on servers, and in any of the 800 Unix clones, BSD, and Linux.

RAID is an acronym for Redundant Array of Independent Drives. It is a group of hard drives that are configured to store data across them in such a way that if one fails, no data is lost. They can alternately be configured to improve performance.
